On Sunday, May 6, Delphi students were proud to see their artwork hanging at West Valley College, scene of the annual Saratoga Rotary Art Show. Delphi artists have participated in this art show for the past 5 years and look forward to the event each spring. Ms. Sewasew, our resident art teacher, teaches the students to "listen" to their artwork, embrace mistakes, and to balance technique, experimentation and exploration.
The following students were honored with their artwork on display:
Congratulations to each of them! Cleaning Up Campbell at the Great American Litter Pickup Event
Twenty-three Delphi students, parents, faculty and alumni gathered at Los Gatos Creek Park in Campbell on April 21 to participate in Campbell's Great American Litter Pickup Event. They joined Campbell residents, city officials, community organizers and the Girl Scouts in the park pavilion to clean the park, bike trail, railroad tracks and fishing areas. By 8:30 a.m. all the participants were equipped with gloves, trash-grabbing sticks, bags for recycling and trash, safety vests and were ready to comb the park for litter. The Delphi crews were recognizable in their orange Delphi Summer T-shirts and gray Delphi P.E. T-shirts peeking through the bright orange safety vests.
Parent Giacomo Vacca ventured down a steep bank where the students could not go to remove plastic bags, bottles and other litter from the creek bed. The youngest participant at age three, Arhath, surprised everyone when he and his mother Shree found the first oversized piece of litter - a shopping cart. Two students in Form 3 (4th grade) , followed a small trail off of the main bike path and found that it led to a hole in the chain link fence. On the other side of the fence they found an abandonded camp where someone had lived long ago. Numerous empty shopping carts, a patio umbrella, telephone books and plastic sheeting were hidden in the bushes. Tall grasses hid the smaller items from view. A crew of boys in Form 4 (5th/6th grade) helped pull the carts through the hole in the fence and up the steep, small path to the main trail. By 9:30 a.m. the students were back at the pavilion with five carts, two of them loaded with trash. The event director was impressed to have such a collection in just one hour of cleaning! At the end of the event, all the participants enjoyed a lunch together of sandwiches and chips. The number one item found was agreed to be cigarette butts, followed by food wrappers. Near the lakes there was also a lot of fishing line and a few areas also hid numerous bottles that were collected for recycling. Last year's cleanup covered multiple locations in Campbell, and 100 volunteers picked up approximately 1,940 pounds of trash and recycling. This year's event focused mainly on Los Gatos Creek Park, the Camden/Hwy 17 ramp and the railroad tracks. We are looking forward to hearing the final count of how much was gathered. The Delphi volunteers agreed that the event was a lot of fun and they are looking forward to participating again next year.
Delphi's Art & Culture Fair Featured on Cover of Santa Clara Weekly
Students were thrilled to see their photo gracing the cover of the Santa Clara Weekly newspaper on April 4th! Writer Diane Andrews was their special guest at Art & Culture Day, their second annual geography, history, art and culture fair. After spending a full month learning about their chosen countries through class field trips, activities and research that spanned a variety of subjects, students transformed their classrooms into various countries and presented what they learned to their fellow schoolmates. See a full album of photos on our Facebook page here. Read the Santa Clara Weekly article "Delphi Academy Students Lead Whirlwind Tour" here. Congratulations to all the students and teachers for an amazing day of learning!
